Solar Heating
Solar heating is just what it sounds like: a way of harnessing
the sun to heat. There are actually multiple ways to engage the sun
and warm your home. Here are a few examples:
· Passive solar heating – this has a lot to do with the
overall layout of your home. For instance, you can have south-facing
windows – these windows will receive the most sunlight during
the winter. The sun will shine in and warm all of the interior surfaces,
including walls, furniture, and floors.
· Pool solar heating – solar heaters for pools are generally
set up completely separately than home solar heaters: they are on a
different system. Water is taken from the pool, pumped up to solar collectors
where the water is warmed, and then pumped back into the pool.
· Solar water heating – most home solar water heaters work
similarly to how pool solar heaters work. Just think of how much water
you heat each week – add up all the times you run the washing
machine and dishwasher, and consider your showers. Now think of how
good for your wallet and the environment it would be if you use a solar
heating for your water!
Note: many of these solar water heaters work best in the summer; but
in the winter, they can still make a big difference by pre-heating the
water for your existing system.
· Home air solar heaters – there are basically two kinds
of solar hot-air systems, open loop and closed loop. Open loop systems
take outdoor air and heat it. Closed loop systems draw in cool air from
the house.
You could also set up a general solar power system for your home, and
run your electric heaters,
etc., off of it… All in all, installing solar heating elements
in your home can save you a lot of money in the long run, as well as
contribute to a better, healthier earth.
